SOIL COLLECTION CEREMONY ON SEVENTY SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF ELBERT WILLIAMS DEATH
On Monday, June 20, 2016 at 10:00am, soil collected from the 1940 lynching site, on the Hatchie River, of Elbert Williams will be presented to representatives from the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) headquartered in Montgomery, Alabama. This event will take place at the Delta Heritage Center located at 121 Sunny Hill Cove, Brownsville, Tennessee. Form 1-40 take exit 56 and travel north on Highway 76. Turn right at the first street on the right, Sunny Hill Cove. Park anywhere in the Heritage Center Parking Lot.
This event is being done as a part of EJI’s Community Remembrance Project. This project is designed to finally recognize all lynching victims by collection of soil form every lynching site in the United States for inclusion in a national memorial in Montgomery sponsored by EJI. This collection from the Hatchie River will be the first from a lynching site outside the State of Alabama. The collected soil will be presented by members of Elbert Williams’s family to EJI representatives.
